Pistol with a snaphance lock

This pistol was made by Robert Mosman of the Canongate in Edinburgh in 1625.

The pistol has a snaphance lock mechanism which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. The walnut stock has a lemon-shaped butt.

The Scottish makers of firearms, swords and daggers were skilled craftsmen who produced striking examples of the Scottish Renaissance style. Such weapons were highly regarded and sought after by foreigners.
