Cannon

This iron cannon was found in the sea off the coast of Aberdeen. It dates from the 16th century and is a breech-loading gun of a type often used on ships.

Iron cannon with a movable chamber, found in the sea at Aberdeen

In the 16th and 17th centuries, firepower developed significantly. The government used weapons such as cannons to exert its own power. Castles which had once been almost invincible were now vulnerable to attack.
