Knife hilt

This wooden hilt belonging to a small knife was found at Coldingham Priory in Berwickshire. It dates from around 1500. The knife would have been placed in a pocket in a scabbard.

The hilt belonged with a ballock knife - a popular medieval type so called because of the distinctive form of the hilt.
