Dirk

The Highland dirk was an all-purpose implement which evolved from the medieval dagger. This example dates from the late 18th century.

The dirk has a plain sheath, a carved wooden hilt and silver mounts. It is engraved with the owners initials 'DR'.

Dirks could be tools, utensils for eating, and weapons. They were made by local craftsmen and carried by most men.
