From the Guildhall, Stirling

Panel of carved wood
Add to album

This carved wooden panel is probably from the Guildhall in Stirling. It dates from the 17th century.

The panel bears the mark of the Stirling Guild, the initials 'I.C.' - perhaps for John Cowan, a prominent 17th century merchant - and the name of John Chyrstie.

Manufacturing and commercial trades were regulated by the burghs' craft guilds. These were powerful bodies, granting commercial and political privileges.
