Detail of a painted screen
Add to album

This is one of six paintings, showing six of the 12 sibyls - ancient Roman prophetesses - on a pine and oak screen. The screen comes from Wester Livilands House in Stirling. It was made for advocate Robert Murray and his wife Christina Cowan in 1629.

The screen shows the sibyls predicting the coming of Christ. The sibyl in this painting is called Libicia.

The imagery on the screen is an example of the Renaissance convention of adapting classical mythology to render it acceptable in a Christian setting.
