Ceiling medallion, one of 'Stirling heads'

This oak ceiling medallion is one of the 'Stirling Heads' - a series of circular panels from the ceiling of the King's Presence Chamber in the Royal Palace at Stirling Castle. Dating from around 1540, the medallion is probably the work of a Frenchman.

The carved medallion depicts a dancing child, a favourite image in Renaissance Art.

Over thirty of the 'Stirling Heads' survive, some with figures from history and mythology, others apparently with representations of contemporaries. They are of a high standard of design and craftsmanship.
