From South Leith Parish Church, Edinburgh

Coat-of-arms of the Masons and Coopers of Leith
Add to album

This carved wooden coat-of-arms of the Masons and Coopers of Leith dates from the early 18th century. It was formerly displayed over a pew in South Leith Parish Church in Edinburgh.

The wooden arms is decorated with masonic emblems and is inscribed, 'The hand of the diligent maketh rich'.

Many trades decorated their own church pews with their arms. These arms may have been produced to commemorate 1734, when the incorporated trades of Leith were declared independent of those of Edinburgh.
