Ceiling medallion, depicting James V
Add to album

This ceiling medallion dates from around 1540 and is one of two thought to represent James V from the ceiling of the King's Presence Chamber in Stirling Castle. The high standard of design and craftsmanship of the medallions suggests they were the work of a French carver.

One of two carved oak medallions thought to represent James V from the ceiling of the King's Presence Chamber in Stirling Castle, c. 1540

There were a number of carved medallions adorning the ceiling of the King's Presence Chamber. Over thirty survive, some depicting figures from history and mythology, others apparently with representations of contemporaries.
