Folding camp-stool, associated with Jenny Geddes

This folding camp-stool is said to be the one which, on Sunday, 23rd July 1637, Jenny Geddes hurled at the head of the Dean of St Giles in Edinburgh, when he read the Liturgy in the church for the first time. It is dated 1565.

Folding stools such as this were used in churches where, before and after the Reformation, the central space was without seating. Members of the congregation brought their own seats to church and these were usually small and portable.
