Pulpit of oak

This oak pulpit is said to be from St Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh. It probably dates from the 17th century.

The simple style of the pulpit could be seen as characteristic of a sometimes severe and uncompromising attitude in the religion of 17th-century Scotland.

The whole interior of St Giles Cathedral was re-arranged in the late 16th century when altars were taken out and pulpit or pulpits installed as focal points in the internal layout of the church.
