Communion flagon

This pewter communion flagon is from the Martyr's Church in Glasgow. It was made in the late 18th or early 19th century by Glasgow pewterers, Robert Graham and James Wardrop. Graham and Wardrop were in operation between 1776 and 1806.

The flagon has plain straight sides sloping inwards and a flat lid with an acorn finial. Inscribed inside the base is 'GRAHAM & WARDROP'.

In Presbyterian churches communion usually took place once or twice a year. Those considered worthy by the elders were invited to sit round a table to share bread and wine, representing the body and blood of Christ.
