From the Martyrs' Church, Glasgow

Communion flagon
Add to album

This pewter communion flagon was made in the late 18th century probably by Graham and Wardrop, pewterers in Glasgow. It comes from the Martyr's Church in Glasgow and is very similar to one made for the church around the same time by J. Wylie of Glasgow.

The flagon has a simple moulded foot, a hollow S-shaped handle, and a simple spout. On the base is the maker's mark or touch, probably Graham and Wardrope's, which has the words 'Success to the United States of America' enclosing a ship in a square.

The words 'Success to the United States of America' in the maker's mark emphasise the importance to Glasgow of trade with North America.
