Communion plate (front)
Add to album

This is the front of a pewter communion plate from the Free Church of Scotland in Garvald in East Lothian. Dated 1843, the plate was made by D Cormack of Edinburgh.

The front is plain apart from lettering around the flat rim which reads, 'FREE CHURCH OF SCOTLAND, GARVALD 1843'.

Communion was one of the two fundamental sacraments in the reformed churches. It required cups for the wine and plates for the bread, and every church in Scotland was supposed to equip itself with suitable vessels.
