Baptismal basin

This pewter baptismal basin is from Newlands Relief Kirk in Peeblesshire. It dates from 1797. Such basins were used at a table or put into baptismal brackets. They held water for baptism, one of the two sacraments in the Presbyterian churches.

The basin is engraved with the inscription: 'Newlands Relief Kirk, 1797'.

In the 18th century many congregations broke away from the established church on points of principle, mainly concerning choice and appointment of ministers. One of the earliest succession groupings was the Relief Church, founded in 1761.
