Hour glass

This church hour glass with wooden stand is from the pulpit of the old church at Muthill in Perthshire. It dates from the 18th century.

The preaching of God's word was central to Presbyterian worship. During the course of a Sunday the minister might preach three separate sermons, at great length and without notes, timing himself with an hour glass.
