Patens are plates on which the bread is placed in the Eucharist during Mass. This lead paten was among the items found in the grave of a bishop in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney. The items are thought to date from the 13th century.

The flat circular has a quatrefoil in concentric circles.

The importance of bishops in the running of the Church is illustrated by the impressive objects found in bishops' graves. They show that bishops had wealth, influence and social status.
