Crosier head

A crosier is a bishop's or abbot's crook. This lead crosier head and part of its socket were among the items found in the grave of a bishop in St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall in Orkney. The items are thought to date from the 13th century.

The crosier has a disc-shaped head with an open-work cross.

The importance of bishops in the running of the Church is illustrated by the impressive objects found in their graves. The objects show that bishops had wealth, influence and social status.
