Collection ladle

This wooden collecting ladle comes from Parton Church in Kirkcudbrightshire. The ladle would have been held by an elder and extended along the pews to gather collections at Sunday services in a Presbyterian Church.

Wooden collection ladle, used in Parton Church, Kirkcudbrightshire

A painting by John Phillip (1817-67) called 'Collecting the Offering in a Scotch Kirk' shows a collecting ladle being used. The painting was first exhibited in London in 1855, where audiences were unfamiliar with the concept of collecting ladles.
