Travelling chalice
Add to album

Chalices are used to hold the wine during Mass. This brass travelling example dates from the 17th or 18th century.

The chalice has a baluster-shaped stem.

After the Reformation, it was often difficult for Catholics to worship openly. Priests found themselves with no churches and had to travel to different Catholic communities and households to conduct Mass.
