Communion cups

These three pewter communion cups were made in the second half of the 18th century by William Hunter of Edinburgh.

Communion cup of pewter

Communion required cups for the wine and plates for the bread, and every church in Scotland had to equip itself with suitable vessels. Both pewter and silver were used to make communion plate. Pewter was cheaper but could be polished to look like silver.
