This pewter communion plate was made around 1749 by William Hunter of Edinburgh. It is plain apart from the maker's mark on the base.

Communion required cups for the wine and plates for the bread, and every church in Scotland had to equip itself with suitable vessels. Both pewter and silver were used to make communion plate. Pewter was cheaper but could be polished to look like silver.
