Bracket for a baptismal basin
Add to album

This is a decorative wrought-iron bracket for a baptismal basin from Aboyne in Aberdeenshire. It dates from the 18th century.

The bracket is hinged so that it could be swung to one side.

After the Reformation, baptism was performed publicly in the body of the kirk and before the congregation. A bracket was fixed to the side of the pulpit to hold the baptismal basin.
