Mould for tokens (Fragment)

This is a fragment of a stone mould for casting pewter or lead tokens. It was found at Dundrennan Abbey in Kirkcudbrightshire but was probably not actually used there. It dates from the 14th century.

Half of a stone mould for casting leaden tokens, from Dundrennan Abbey, Kirkcudbrightshire, 14th century

Dundrennan Abbey was founded as a house of Cistercian monks in 1142. Its lands were acquired after the Reformation by John Murray, late Earl of Annandale, but the abbey church remained in use as the parish church until 1742.
