Fragment of stained glass

This fragment of stained or painted glass is from Melrose Abbey in the Borders. It dates from the 15th century.

The glass depicts the arms of the Howard family (of England).

In medieval times, the Church acted as patron for artists and craftsmen and inspired a great variety of artistic activity, from woodcarving to illuminated manuscripts, from sculpture to stained glass.
