From Dumbarton

Crucifix
Add to album

This brass crucifix came from a grave in Dumbarton. It probably belonged to a 17th-century priest. The crucifix is of continental origin and was probably adapted from an altar or processional cross.

It is cast in the Baroque style, with an image of the crucified Christ.

It is known that Irish missionary priests had some success in gaining converts to Catholicism in the west of Scotland in the 1620s and 1630s.
