Hydrostatic bubbles, for measuring strength of spirits

Hydrostatic bubbles were used to measure the strength of spirits, each bubble having a slightly different density. This box of eleven bubbles is by Peter Massino and dates from 1815.

Box of eleven hydrostatic balls

From the 18th century onwards, research carried out by observation and experiment was increasingly measured in numbers, rather than by verbal description. New accurate and sensitive measuring instruments were needed to produce these numbers.
