Brace and bit
Add to album

Carpenter's brace and bit found under flooring of an old house in Edinburgh.

A brace and bit is a tool for boring, consisting of a removable drill or 'bit' fixed into a rotating handle or 'brace'. This example was found under the floor of a house in West Bow in Edinburgh in 1849.

The carpenter's brace and bit was an important tool as most wooden objects were pegged rather than screwed together.
