This wooden ladle, with a hook for hanging, may have belonged to Niel Gow (1727-1807). Gow was a gifted fiddler who earned his living from music and did much to preserve and promote traditional Scottish music.

Gow's four sons - William, Andrew, John and Nathaniel - all became famous as musicians. In 1784, Gow published a 'Collection of Strathspey Reels' with his son Nathaniel.
