Spoon associated with Niel Gow
Add to album

This horn spoon may have belonged to Niel Gow (1727-1807). Gow was a gifted fiddler who earned his living from music and did much to preserve and promote traditional Scottish music.

Cattle horn was heated so that it became soft. It was then moulded to make spoons and other household utensils.

Gow's four sons - William, Andrew, John and Nathaniel - all became famous as musicians. In 1784, Gow published a 'Collection of Strathspey Reels' with his son Nathaniel.
