March played on a modern Highland bagpipe by William McCallum (audio clip)
Add to album

A competition-style march, written in 2/4 time, played by the Campbeltown-born piper William McCallum. Competitions marches of this type evolved in the 1830s, reflecting a demand for new music generated by the rapid growth of Highland Games and outdoor piping competitions at the time. The tunes often feature elaborate gracenoting.

The tune, The Glengarry Gathering, was composed by Queen Victoria's piper Angus MacKay.

Played by William McCallum. The instrument features drones made by Peter Henderson (c. 1900), and chanter made by David Naill (1986). Courtesy of BBC Scotland.
