Uilleann or Union bagpipe made by William Rowsome, Dublin, 1898 played by Kevin Rowsome (audio clip)

The tune, 'Kitty's Rambles', is a traditional jig of the type particularly associated with Uilleann piping. Like many Scottish tunes, it has more than one title and has also been known as 'The Ladies' Triumph' and 'Dan the Cobbler'. The tune features elaborate fingering technique extending the melody into an upper octave.

The Rowsomes have been an influential family of pipers and pipemakers over generations, including William, Leo, Leon, Liam and Kevin the performer on this extract. Leo Rowsome (1903-1970) was a great and celebrated teacher of the Uilleann pipes and considered the best ever maker of wide bore concert pitch Uilleann pipes. His life and work for piping were vital in a period when the playing and Uilleann piping was in danger of dying out.

Available on CD: 'The Rowsome Tradition' (Kelero 001).
