Highland bagpipe chanter stamped at neck
Add to album

Highland bagpipe chanter by Forbes of Dundee, 1920s, of African blackwood mounted with a heavy sole turned from a synthetic material to imitate ivory.

The chanter is turned with three decorative (and strengthening) rings at the neck and a wide conspicuous double ring at the bottom end to accommodate the sole. It is stamped 'J T FORBES/DUNDEE' on the neck.

The firm of J T Forbes made Highland bagpipes in Dundee from the 1890s until the 1940s. Latterly their products and sets of pipes were made by another firm, Thow of Dundee. A set of their Highland bagpipes is in the Balfour Collection in the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford.
