Tartan bag used for holding a drone section from a set of Union bagpipes

Wool bag in Macduff tartan, 19th century used to hold a drone section from a set of Union bagpipes (H.1995.795.1) that belonged to William Mackie.

It is significant that the former owner of this set of Union pipes has made a set of small woollen covers to hold chanter and drone sections when the pipes are put away in their case. This suggests an instrument of high value and fine finish and a player who was careful to preserve the separate parts of the instrument and to partially dismantle it to ensure a longer life for the reeds.
