This painting shows music and dancing at a celebration, probably a wedding, in a rural community. It gives a rare glimpse of those who served and depended on the landowners, and shows that music was enjoyed by all. This piper is playing for the bridal couple who are leading the dance. This type of painting was part of a European fashion for illustrating and sometimes parodying rural life.
