Book of manuscript music comprising 172 tunes

Book of manuscript music comprising 172 tunes, early 19th century, which belonged to William Mackie of Aberdeen whose set of Union or Pastoral bagpipes are also in the collections of the National Museums of Scotland (H.1995.795.1).

The selection of tunes is typical of the repertoire of the late 18th and early 19th century, consisting of both traditional and 'modern' song airs, dances and quicksteps.

Many of the tunes, such as 'Speed the Plough' and 'Sleepy Maggie', are still familiar; others are no longer known, at least under these names, for example 'The Slashers', 'Quick March from Oscar and Malvina', 'The Duke of Wellington's New Grand March', 'Comet Waltz', 'Staten Island Hornpipe', and 'Britain's Lament for Nelson'.
