Small card box used to post a set of drones reeds and various other items

Small rectangular card box with a brown lid and metal corners which was used to send a set of drones through the post. The box is addressed to 'Pipe Major Ronald Mackenzie, Gordon Castle, Fochabers' and is postmarked and stamped with a Edward VII one penny stamp, circa 1908.

The box contains a black japanned safety pin used for attaching silk ribbon to Highland bagpipe drones, a stick of red sealing wax used for closing the ends of bagpipe drone reeds, a small strip of sandpaper for adjusting the tuning of Highland bagpipe chanter reeds and a selection of bass drone reeds, tenor drone reeds and chanter reeds.

This item was purchased by the National Museums of Scotland in 1988, along with a set of bagpipes that belonged to John Bàn Mackenzie, from the grandson of John R. Mackenzie of the Liverpool Scottish, who was the son of Pipe Major Ronald Mackenzie of the 78th (Seaforth) Highlanders, the nephew of John Bàn Mackenzie.
