Great Highland Bagpipe, 20th century

Diagram of the Great Highland Bagpipe, published in the sales catalogue and price list of the Glasgow Bagpipe Maker, Peter Henderson, about 1930.

Diagram of the Great Highland Bagpipe with all the separate parts named, drawn and published for the Glasgow Bagpipe Maker, Peter Henderson about 1930. The reputation of Hendersons' firm and the quality of their product, renowned as excellent Highland bagpipes for generations, lends authority to this diagram. It can often be seen that drawings and representations of the bagpipe fail to capture the essential character and details of the instrument and may be little better than caricature and cartoon.

Peter Henderson (1851-1903) came from Inverkeithing though his family was originally from Latheronwheel in Caithness. He took over the bagpipe-making shop in Glasgow of Robert MacKinnon who had earlier taken over the premises of Donald Macphee. Henderson had set up business in 1868, was himself a very good piper and became Pipe Major of the Glasgow Volunteers. His bagpipes have always had a very high reputation.
