William MacDonald, painted at Abergeldie in 1866 for Queen Victoria by Kenneth MacLeay. William was born in Glen Urquhart and he was appointed Piper to the Prince of Wales in 1865.

William MacDonald, uncle of Pipe Major John MacDonald, Inverness, represents the 19th century of Highland piper who made a profession of and earned a living by piping professionally for Royalty and the Nobility, in effect the new patrons who were keeping Highland arts alive.
