Portrait drawing of Donald Mackay (1845 - 1893)

Portrait drawing of Piper Donald Mackay included in C.N. MacIntyre North's folio collection 'Leabhar Comunn nam Fior Ghael' or 'The Book of the Club of True Highlanders'. Donald Mackay was the son of Donald Mackay and the nephew of Angus Mackay (1803 - 1859), Piper to Queen Victoria. Donald Mackay (shown here) was taught by John Bàn Mackenzie and became Piper to the Prince of Wales in 1874. As a prize-winning exponent of piobaireachd, he helped General Charles Thomason to prepare his collection of piobaireachd, published in 1900 as 'Ceol Mor' with two hundred and eighty-eight tunes.

Mr MacIntyre North was an enthusiastic expatriate Scot who made a special study of Scottish Gaelic antiquities and arts. He founded an organisation in London called 'The Club of True Highlanders' which evoked the memory of an organisation founded by MacDonnell of Glengary in the 1820s.
