Frontpiece from Ceol Mor Notation

Frontpiece from 'Ceol Mor Notation: A New And Abbreviated System Of Musical Notation For The Piobaireachd As Played On The Highland Bagpipe With Examples published by John Mackay, Celtic Monthly Office, 9 Blythswood Drive, Glasgow, 1893.

Collection of piobaireachd music by Major General Charles Thomason (1833-1911), representing 30 years study, research and collection. Originally published in 3 parts of which 'Ceol Mor Notation' is one, published in Glasgow in 1893. The complete work with 288 tunes was then published in 1900 as 'A Collection of Piobaireachd played on the Great Highland Bagpipe - Ceòl Mór'. This prelude to the complete collection explains his system of musical shorthand. With nearly 300 extended pieces of music, the editor wished to compress the whole text to allow it to be fitted into the one book and to be made available to pipers at a modest price.
