Set of Highland Reel bagpipes

Set of Highland Reel bagpipes mounted with bone and horn, 18th century, with a replacement chanter made by Peter Henderson of Glasgow in the late 19th century. Collected by Dr Duncan Fraser.

Peter Henderson (1851 - 1903) was a successful bagpipe maker, a pipe music collector and publisher. He founded his business in Glasgow in 1868, taking over the premises which belonged to Donald Macphee. He took over the bagpipe-making shop in Glasgow of Robert MacKinnon who had earlier taken over the premises of Donald Macphee. Henderson had set up business in 1868, was himself a very good piper and became Pipe Major of the Glasgow Volunteers. His bagpipes have always had a very high reputation.

Dr Alexander Duncan Fraser MD (1849-1920), born in Lochgilphead of an Inverness-shire family, graduated in medicine from Edinburgh University in 1874 and subsequently practised in Northumberland, Skye and Falkirk. His lifelong hobby was playing the pipes, studying the history of the bagpipe and its music, and collecting ancient and modern bagpipes 'of all nations'. In 1906 he published a book, Some Reminiscences and the Bagpipe, in which many of the instruments in his collection were illustrated. Some of his collection was donated to the Royal Scottish Museum in 1947.
