Wheel from Blair Drummond, Perthshire
Add to album

This wooden wheel was found at Blair Drummond in Perthshire. It is the earliest preserved wheel from Scotland, dating from between 1260 and 810 BC.

The wheel was made of three pieces of ash. It is now warped in shape.

All early wheels were solid without spokes or tyres, made from a single piece of wood or three joined together, as here. At first carts or wagons were pulled by teams of oxen yoked together. Later, teams of horses were used.
