Pots from Midhowe Broch, Rousay, Orkney
Add to album

These ceramic pots and stone lid were found at Midhowe Broch on Rousay in Orkney. They are examples of the types of cooking and storage equipment used in broch settlements between 200 BC and 400 AD.

Portion of the rim and wall of a pot of sandy buff-coloured fabric, from Midhowe Broch, Rousay, Orkney

Although brochs were defensive structures, finds of everyday activity, such as these pots, show that they were meant to be lived in, rather than simply refuges in times of trouble.
