Knives from Mumrills, Stirlingshire

These iron knives were found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. They illustrate some of the different types used between 140 and 165 AD.

All of the knives are fragmentary and lack their handles. Some preserve their tangs which would have slotted into handles, perhaps of wood or bone.

A number of knives of various shapes and sizes have been found at the Roman forts in Scotland. They were presumably designed for a variety of purposes, including for food preparation and eating.
