Jar from Mumrills, Stirlingshire
Add to album

This ceramic jar was found at the site of the Roman fort at Mumrills in Stirlingshire. It was imported from southwestern England between 140 and 165 AD.

The jar is of a type known as black burnished ware 1 (BB1), a kitchen ware imported from southwestern England. It has a wide, turned-out rim and lines scratched on the outside to form a crude lattice pattern. It has been partly restored.

An administrative system existed to ensure that the Roman army was supplied with food and other goods. Quartermasters were responsible for obtaining supplies, and dealt with army craftsmen, various traders, and the native population.
