Pot (2 of 2) from Eilean an Tighe, North Uist, Outer Hebrides

This ceramic jar was found at Eilean an Tighe on North Uist in the Outer Hebrides. It is an early example of ceramic production in Scotland, made sometime between 3300 and 2800 BC.

The deep jar was decorated with lines and burnished to give it a glossy finish. It has been restored.

People needed containers, but only settled societies, usually farmers, regularly made and used pottery. Making pots did not fit well with nomadic life. It was necessary to stay in one place long enough to collect materials, make the pots, dry them and fire them. Pottery is also relatively heavy and fragile, and thus difficult to carry around.
