Saddle quern and rubbing stone from Orkney
Add to album

A saddle quern was used for grinding grains and seeds. This saddle quern was found in Orkney. It could date any time between 4000 and 0 BC.

The lower quernstone has been worn to a small hollow from the action of rubbing with a rubbing stone.

The earliest type of quern, the saddle quern, was used from around 3800 BC. They were simple to use: the grains or seeds were placed on the lower stone, and a rubbing stone was pushed backwards and forwards over it.
