These bones, shells and fish bones were found at a midden - refuse heap - at the early settlement site at Morton Farm at Tentsmuir in Fife. The site was a camp of gatherer-fisher-hunters, who occupied it seasonally to exploit the local resources between 6000 and 5000 BC.

Many settlements of this period have been identified from their middens. Careful examination of the remains, even looking at them under microscopes, provides valuable evidence of what people ate. Bones of birds, fish, sea mammals, deer and wild boar have been found, together with shells from shellfish.
