Computer drawing of an outside hearth
Add to album

This drawing shows a hearth used for cooking at a settlement dating from between 6000 and 5000 BC.

People at this time did not stay in one place and farm the land. Instead they obtained food by hunting, fishing, gathering nuts and berries, or digging for roots.

Remains of fires are found on most sites of this period. In some cases burnt hearthstones or soil have been discovered. Charcoal, burnt seeds, nut shells or grains also sometimes survive.
